Tech with Mental Health Awareness
What if one simple connection could change a life?
Picture this. A young person in Kenya is going through a rough time. They need someone to talk to—someone who understands. Somewhere out there, a qualified counsellor is ready to help. But they’re miles apart. They may never find each other.
Here’s the hard truth: 1 in 4 Kenyans visiting a health facility has a mental health condition, according to data shared by the Ministry of Health. Yet 75% of individuals with these conditions never receive treatment due to pervasive social stigma, high costs, and help simply feeling out of reach.
I’m a software engineer. And I keep asking myself: if technology can deliver food to my door in minutes, why can’t it deliver help to someone who desperately needs it?
What If an App Could Change the Game?
Most clients naturally want the big names—the experienced counselors with long waiting lists. But what about the young ones? Fresh out of college, bursting with passion, trained in the latest approaches—but struggling to find clients and build a name.
What if an app could flip the script?
-
For young counselors: It would be a launchpad. A place to build their reputation through client reviews, showcase their unique skills, and get matched with people who truly need them.
-
For clients: It would be a safe space. Anonymous if they want. Private. A place to find someone who speaks their language, understands their background, and meets them right where they are.
A recent public health study highlighted that Kenya’s psychologist-to-population ratio is alarmingly low, estimated at just 1 psychologist for every 4.6 million individuals, a statistic detailed in healthcare policy research by Jaguga et al.. That’s not just a gap—it’s a crisis. We can’t train enough professionals overnight. But we can build tools that help every counselor reach more people. That’s not just engineering. That’s responsibility.
Technology Connects. People Heal.
Behind every video call, every chat, and every app is something no algorithm can replace—a caring human being.
The World Health Organization reminds us that technology is just an enabler. The real healing? That happens in the hands of skilled, compassionate professionals.
And the demand for counsellors is exploding—in schools, hospitals, workplaces, faith communities, and digital platforms. Technology opens the door. But it’s people who walk through it and bring the healing.
Ready to Be That Person?
If helping others is your calling, counselling psychology is your path.
Since 2006, Africana College of Professionals (ACOP) has been training compassionate, ethical counsellors who are already making a difference across East Africa.
